HRH Prince Mired bin Raad, Lord Chamberlain and President of the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (HCD), met with Amman Mayor Dr. Yousef Shawarbeh at HCD's headquarters to discuss issues of common interest, including advancing the implementation of the Greater Amman Municipality’s commitments made at the Global Disability Summit 2025 and developing related implementation plans.
HRH Prince Mired valued the close cooperation and ongoing coordination with Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), describing it as a model of best practice in unifying efforts to ensure that GAM’s projects incorporate accessibility requirements for persons with disabilities in accordance with the best technical and engineering standards in the Code of Building Requirements for Persons with Disabilities.

For his part, Dr. Shawarbeh emphasized the importance of continued coordination and exchange of technical expertise between the two sides, noting that accessibility and facilitative arrangements have become essential requirements in the projects implemented by GAM.
The meeting discussed the latest developments related to ensuring accessibility for persons with disabilities along the new high-frequency bus routes in the Madaba and Balqa governorates.
The meeting also addressed the procedural steps to start designing suitable and safe pedestrian crossings by installing traffic signals with an audio alert system to enable individuals with visual disabilities to cross safely at a number of major traffic intersections in the capital.
The meeting discussed the executive steps to complete the preparations for the second phase of the model area project in Jabal Al-Hussein, which aims to facilitate pedestrian movement for people with and without disabilities. This includes installing tactile paving for persons with visual disabilities, making sidewalks accessible, and removing obstacles that hinder pedestrian movement.
This location was selected due to the presence of public service and commercial buildings, medical clinics, banks, mosques, associations, schools, and heavy pedestrian traffic.
The meeting also discussed the “Resilient Inclusive Cities Hub” project in the Abdali area, an initiative of GAM in partnership with HCD, local organizations working with persons with disabilities, and urban planning experts.
The project, funded by the European Union, will be implemented over the next two years to transform the Abdali area into a model for inclusive and resilient urban development.
The project is expected to directly benefit more than 156,000 people, including 7,000 persons with disabilities.
