Forming a Work Team to Enable People with Disabilities to Access Telecommunications Services

The work of the specialized team to enable people with disabilities to access telecommunications services started today, Monday. It was formed under the chairmanship of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC).

The commission includes representatives of the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Orange, Zain, Umniah, the Information Technology Association of Jordan (Intaj) and Coalition Association for Persons with Disabilities, the Cultural Forum for the Blind and representatives of the hearing-impaired, the visually-disabled and persons with motor disabilities.

The Chairman of the Board of Deputies for the Association, Dr. Ghazi Al-Jabour said that the team held its first meeting. It aims to unify efforts, exchange knowledge and expertise to come up with a unified and an applicable plan of action. In line with the responsibilities of the TRC, the plan will implement initiatives and projects directed at persons with disabilities to accelerate and facilitate their access to communications and information technology means and services.

He stressed that the idea of forming the team was launched by the Commission due to the need to empower people with disabilities to overcome the obstacles they face in dealing with daily life conditions, especially that the segment of persons with disabilities has exceeded 11% of the total number of the population.

He added that the plan of action the team will implement in 2018 is based on the recommendations and proposals made by persons with disabilities and all concerned bodies during their participation in the workshop held by the Commission last October.  It focused on the access of persons with disabilities to telecommunications and information technology services. The team is entrusted with the task of communicating with all stakeholders to achieve the desired goals.
